L&T has a Research & Development Centre at Mumbai and Technology and Innovation Centre at Baroda which carry out process engineering, product development, mechanical design and analysis, process evaluation, computer-aided design and simulation, technology absorption and adaption, commissioning, trouble-shooting and failure analysis. These centres provide technical support in these areas to the Engineering & Construction (E&C) and Heavy Engineering groups.

Technology areas : Cement and Mineral process, Fertilizer, Oil and Gas, Petroleum Refining, Petrochemical, Unit operations, Food and Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, Process automation, Material science, Heat transfer, Energy recovery systems, Cement machinery, Rotating machinery, Production engineering, Stress analysis, piping and Structural analysis and Prototype development.

Facilities include pilot plants and sophisticated laboratories such as mineral, chemical, corrosion, environmental, particulate, machinery monitoring, acoustic emission, experimental stress analysis, creep testing, laser holography, servo hydraulics, etc.

Both these centres have close liaison with premiere institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Indian Institute of Petroleum and National Chemical Laboratory, and premier international research agencies like FRI and HTFS.

L&T has also established a Computer Training Centre to provide in-depth training in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and engineering. L&T’s EPC Programme Academy enhances technical expertise in specific engineering disciplines, systems engineering and project management.
